Short answer: the edge profile determines where the finished wall, seal, enclosure channel and walking area meet. A tray can have the correct nominal length and still be unsuitable if its upstand, radius, flat landing or cut edge conflicts with the enclosure system.

Request a section drawing instead of relying on a product photograph. The drawing should show the finished tray edge, wall finish, seal line and enclosure channel in the same reference section.

Draw the finished wall, not the rough opening

The enclosure is fitted after boards, tiles, adhesive and sealant have changed the opening. Mark the finished wall faces and channel centreline on the tray drawing. Include the manufacturer’s adjustment range and the minimum landing needed for the seal.

Do not extend a tray edge with a bead of silicone and call it a tolerance solution. Sealant can close a controlled small joint; it cannot replace a missing support surface, correct a twisted wall or make an incompatible radius flat.

Inspect the corner before closing the joint

At installation, check the front edge, rear corners and channel line under neutral light. Photograph the dry fit before sealant. After sealing, keep the record with the enclosure drawing and tray batch information.

No. Width only helps when it aligns with the wall and channel geometry and does not reduce usable shower space.

Confirm the finished relationship to the enclosure

The drain position is not only a plumbing decision. A waste cover, trap or access panel can conflict with the enclosure threshold, a door swing or a support leg. Overlay the tray outline, waste centre, finished wall faces and enclosure footprint on one drawing.

Do not infer the waste centre from the nominal tray size. Account for wall finishes, trim, tolerance and any cut boundary stated by the tray manufacturer. If the enclosure is already selected, use its finished adjustment range—not its nominal model name.

Test before the work is concealed

Before tiling, run a controlled flow test, inspect the underside and confirm that the connection remains dry. Record photographs of the installed waste, seals, support and access route. A successful first flow test is useful evidence, but it does not replace the applicable installation instructions or a waterproofing inspection.
