How to Compare Shower Tray Quotations: Normalize Material, Weight, Support, Waste and Warranty

Wakebath · B2B shower tray decision system

Compare one controlled product definition—not three different interpretations of the same nominal size.

A practical handoff guide for teams that need a defensible decision—not another supplier brochure.

Short answer: Do not compare shower tray quotations by unit price until every supplier is quoting the same product definition, installation scope, evidence pack, packaging route and warranty boundary. Build one comparison sheet with controlled units and revision numbers. Mark each field as confirmed, excluded, conditional or missing. Procurement owns the commercial comparison, but technical, quality, logistics and after-sales teams must release the fields that create their future cost. A lower price is not a saving if it transfers an undefined waste, support, compliance, damage or claim risk to the buyer.

Why Two Valid Quotations May Still Be Incomparable

A supplier may quote a nominally identical 1,200 × 800 mm tray while offering a different:

  • product construction and surface layer;
  • actual external dimensions or tolerance basis;
  • product height and underside profile;
  • drain position and compatible waste;
  • support or bedding requirement;
  • net and packaged weight;
  • slip, cleanability or durability evidence;
  • cut-to-size permission;
  • carton, pallet and protection level;
  • included accessories;
  • Incoterms® rule and named delivery point;
  • inspection scope; or
  • warranty and claim process.

The quotations can therefore describe different commercial risks even when the headline dimensions, colour and unit price look the same.

Start With One Controlled Product Definition

Create a buyer-controlled specification identifier before requesting revised quotations.

Example: WB-RFQ-TRAY-1200x800-LH-WHITE-REV03

That identifier should point to one controlled pack:

  1. dimensioned product drawing;
  2. construction description;
  3. finish, colour and texture reference;
  4. waste and drain-interface definition;
  5. installation/support route;
  6. required evidence by destination market;
  7. packaging and labelling requirements;
  8. inspection and acceptance criteria; and
  9. commercial delivery basis.

ISO 10007 provides current guidance on configuration management across a product or service life cycle. It does not prescribe this shower-tray identifier or approve the product, but it supports the underlying control principle: buyers and suppliers need to know which configuration and revision they are discussing.

Normalize the Quotation Before Comparing Price

Use the same units and definitions for every candidate.

Field Required quotation entry Why it changes the decision Owner
Product type Finished tray, receptor, shower base or tile-ready former These are not equivalent finished products Technical
Construction Surface/cap, body/core, reinforcement and underside A marketing family name does not define the product Technical + Quality
Nominal size Catalogue or order designation Useful for range naming, not sufficient for fit Product manager
Actual dimensions Drawing dimensions, datum and stated tolerance Controls enclosure, wall and opening fit Engineering
Height Product, rim/edge and installation height stated separately Controls recess, threshold and drain clearance Engineering
Net product weight Exact SKU, excluding packaging Supports handling and like-for-like comparison Technical + Logistics
Pack data Gross weight, carton size, units/pallet and pallet limits Changes freight, storage and receiving Logistics
Waste scope Supplied or excluded; model, flow basis and drawing An “included waste” can still be incompatible Technical + Procurement
Support method Current model-specific instruction Changes labour, materials and liability Technical
Cutting Permitted zone, method, edge treatment and warranty effect “Cuttable” is not a complete instruction Technical + After-sales
Surface evidence Test method, surface variant, result and report scope Texture or “anti-slip” wording is not evidence Quality / Compliance
Packaging validation Test or validation route and configuration tested A carton statement does not prove route fitness Logistics + Quality
Inspection Sample plan, defect catalogue and records supplied Defines what can release or reject the lot Quality + Procurement
Warranty Duration, start point, exclusions and remedy A long duration may still have a narrow remedy Legal / After-sales
Trade term Exact Incoterms® 2020 rule and named place/port Allocates specified obligations, costs and risk points Procurement + Logistics
Lead time Start trigger and completion event “30 days” is ambiguous without both Procurement + Planning
Quote validity Currency, tax, tooling and validity period Prevents a stale or partial comparison Finance + Procurement

Weight-normalization field

For rectangular trays, add a comparable weight calculation:

area_m² = length_mm × width_mm ÷ 1,000,000
kg_per_m² = net_product_weight_kg ÷ area_m²
normalized_900×900_weight_kg = kg_per_m² × 0.81

Use net product weight, not gross shipping weight. For quadrant or irregular products, the length × width bounding rectangle is only a stated comparison convention unless the exact surface area is known. The normalized 900 × 900 figure is an estimate, not a real SKU weight.

Do Not Let One Department Complete the Sheet Alone

The quotation comparison is an internal handoff document.

Handoff Input supplied Receiving role checks Release record
Product manager → Technical target market, channel, size mix and positioning installation and performance feasibility approved product definition
Technical → Procurement released drawing, interfaces and permissible variants all suppliers quote the same revision controlled RFQ pack
Compliance → Procurement applicable market route and required documents quotation includes the required evidence scope evidence requirement matrix
Supplier → Quality reports, sample data, traceability and inspection proposal model, finish, revision and report scope match qualification status
Supplier → Logistics carton, pallet, gross weight and route assumptions handling, warehousing and freight inputs are complete logistics release
After-sales → Procurement diagnostic needs, spare parts and remedy expectations contract and warranty do not leave service gaps service boundary
Procurement → Decision sponsor normalized commercial and residual-risk summary conditions and owners are visible award, conditional award or hold

This avoids the familiar late-stage email: “Technical assumed it was included,” “Purchasing thought quality had approved it,” or “Logistics never saw the final pack size.”

Separate Four Different Costs

1. Quoted product cost

The price for the stated product and included accessories under the stated commercial basis.

2. Landed logistics cost

Freight, insurance where applicable, customs-related costs, local handling, warehousing and delivery. Incoterms® rules help allocate specified obligations, costs and risk between seller and buyer, but the ICC explicitly states that they are not a substitute for the sales contract.

3. Installation-system cost

Waste, support material, bedding or adhesive, waterproofing interfaces, lifting, cutting, labour and access provisions that sit outside the product carton.

4. Risk-adjusted service cost

Expected inspection, damage, missing-component, return, replacement, technician, room-downtime and claim-administration exposure. This is a buyer model, not a number that a product standard automatically supplies.

Do not hide these four values inside one unsupported “total cost” score. Record the assumptions and owner of each input.

Four-cost model for comparing shower tray quotations The comparable buying decision combines quoted product, landed logistics, installation system and risk-adjusted service exposure without inventing percentages. FIGURE 2 · COST BOUNDARY The unit price is only one of four decision inputs Keep the values separate so every assumption has an owner and can be challenged. 1 Quoted productcost Defined tray configuration,included waste/accessoriesand stated trade basis. Build a Decision Register Instead of an Email Chain

Decision Status Evidence / revision Owner Stop condition Next action
Exact construction Confirmed / Pending / Unknown layer description Rev __ Technical generic material label only supplier to issue construction statement
Enclosure landing zone drawing Rev __ Engineering rim geometry not defined coordinate with enclosure team
Waste compatibility waste + tray drawings Technical model or seal interface missing joint drawing review
Destination-market evidence report/listing/DoP reference Compliance model or scope mismatch obtain correct evidence or hold
Packaging route pack drawing + validation record Logistics test route does not match distribution define route-relevant validation
Warranty remedy warranty Rev __ After-sales replacement labour/freight responsibility open commercial clarification

Recommended status language:

  • Confirmed: the cited current record answers the field.
  • Conditionally accepted: release depends on a named action or limit.
  • Pending supplier evidence: a statement exists, but the required record is missing.
  • Buyer decision required: more than one technically valid route remains.
  • Held: quotation or order release must stop.
  • Excluded: outside the supplier scope and priced or controlled elsewhere.

Evidence Is Layered, Not Interchangeable

Evidence What it can support What it cannot prove alone
Law or market framework obligations in a named jurisdiction exact SKU construction or site suitability
Product standard characteristics and methods within its scope compliance in every market or correct installation
Certification/listing current model coverage within the listed scope another size, finish, factory or revision by assumption
Test report result for stated specimens and conditions every production lot or an altered texture
Product drawing/manual dimensions and installation limits for that revision independent performance certification
Approved sample agreed appearance and configuration automatic mass-production consistency
Pre-shipment inspection sampled lot evidence under stated criteria future lots or hidden performance not inspected
Marketing page a supplier claim to verify procurement release

For EU construction products, the European Commission explains the relationship between the applicable harmonised technical specification, declaration and CE marking. That framework does not rank competing shower trays or approve a buyer's installation detail. For the United States and Canada, the applicable fixture standard can depend on construction; a generic logo or reference is not a substitute for a current model-level listing and scope.

Reconstructed Buying Case — Not Wakebath Project Data

A distributor receives two quotations for a 1,200 × 800 mm textured tray.

Field Candidate A Candidate B
Unit price lower 7% higher
Construction “stone resin” surface, core, reinforcement and underside stated
Weight 29 kg, basis not stated 24 kg net; 28 kg gross
Waste “included” named waste, drawing and seal interface supplied
Support “install normally” current model-specific support drawing
Slip claim “anti-slip” named method and report scope supplied
Packaging carton only pack drawing, pallet pattern and validation record
Warranty 10 years 5 years with stated remedy and exclusions

Candidate B should not automatically win. Candidate A should first be asked to close the missing fields against the same RFQ revision. If Candidate A cannot do so, the buyer is not choosing between the same level of defined scope. If it can, the commercial comparison can proceed on better evidence.

The lesson is not that a higher price is safer. The lesson is that an undefined quotation cannot support a defensible price decision.

Eight Release Gates Before Award

  1. Use case fixed: destination market, channel, installation and buyer type are stated.
  2. Configuration controlled: exact model, size, drain position, finish and revision are identified.
  3. Interfaces released: support, waste, waterproofing and enclosure landing are coordinated.
  4. Evidence mapped: required product and market documents match the proposed model and finish.
  5. Sample route agreed: appearance, fit and functional checks have named approvers.
  6. Inspection defined: defect categories, sample plan and records are agreed before production.
  7. Logistics defined: pack, pallet, route, labelling and receiving method are known.
  8. Commercial boundary signed: price, trade term, delivery trigger, warranty remedy and exclusions are explicit.

A conditional award is legitimate only when the open condition, owner and closure date are recorded. “To be confirmed later” is not a release gate.

Request a quotation-gap review

Send Wakebath the destination market, target sizes, annual volume, installation route and an anonymised specification or quotation field list through the contact page. Wakebath can return a structured missing-input and interface checklist for supplier clarification. The review does not replace the buyer's engineering, compliance, legal or commercial approval.
