How to Prepare Shower Door Measurements Before Requesting a Quote

Wakebath · B2B project decision guide

Quote from a traceable opening survey. Release manufacture only against an approved final configuration.

A practical measurement pack for buyers, site teams and enclosure suppliers: record the finished interfaces, expose assumptions and keep quoting separate from dimensional release.

Shower EnclosuresMeasurement-to-quote handoff9 min read

Short answer: Send a dimensioned, dated survey of the opening and its installation interfaces, not a nominal size such as “900 mm door.” Identify which dimensions are measured after finishing and which are still design assumptions. Include wall plumb, the tray or floor landing, door movement and nearby obstructions. Ask the supplier to check the complete survey against the exact enclosure configuration. A budget quotation is not permission to manufacture bespoke glass or install the enclosure.

Decide What the Measurement Pack Must Approve

A useful pack makes the next decision explicit. “Please quote” and “Approved for manufacture” must not mean the same thing.

Decision stage What the pack should establish What it does not release
Budget comparison Layout, indicative dimensions, preferred finish and unresolved site assumptions Final glass dimensions, product fit or installation
Model selection Finished opening geometry, landing and operating clearances checked against an identified product Unrecorded site changes or a different hardware set
Manufacturing release Approved drawing revision, final survey, configuration and resolved exceptions Any later change to tiles, tray position, fixing or handing

Use Measured, Design allowance or Unconfirmed beside each critical value. Blank fields should trigger a question, not silently become supplier assumptions.

Freeze the Survey Inputs Before Comparing Prices

Agree a room identifier, units and measurement reference before anyone fills in the sheet. Measure between the surfaces relevant to the selected installation, and mark them on a sketch. For a recess this may be finished wall to finished wall; for a corner layout, the product drawing may require other references. Do not assume every model uses the same datum.

Input Required record Owner of the input
Opening widths Top, middle and bottom readings; height of each reading; measurement reference Site surveyor or installer
Opening height Available height at relevant positions; beams, ceiling slopes or other limits Site surveyor
Wall geometry Plumb observations, irregular surfaces and corners; identified measurement method Installer; designer resolves interface implications
Finish status Installed finish or proposed build-up; revision and unresolved thickness allowances Main contractor or designer
Tray or floor landing Model/drawing, glass-line position, edge geometry and finished level reference Tray/floor installer and enclosure installer
Door movement Plan view, handing, movement envelope, handle projection and obstructions Designer and installer
Appearance Glass type, visible hardware, profile and finish reference Buyer or designer

Keep the raw readings. Averaging different widths can conceal a leaning wall. Conversely, choosing the smallest width alone does not establish compatibility: profile adjustment, wall plumb, panel position and fixing details still need the exact manufacturer's review. This article does not prescribe a universal deduction or adjustment allowance.

Keep opening readings and operating clearances on separate viewsAn illustrative elevation records widths at top, middle and bottom between identified finished faces. A separate plan marks the landing, hinged door movement and nearby vanity. No dimensions, deduction or fitting allowance are prescribed. Survey the opening. Then check how the door operates.Show measurement surfaces, units, reading heights and finish status. ELEVATION: retain all raw readingsPLAN: verify the selected layout Top widthMiddle widthBottom width Blue lines: identified finished faces.Record plumb separately; do not averagedifferent widths into a fit confirmation. Shower areaMark glass / seal landing Vanity Check door travel, handle projectionand adjacent fittings on the actual plan. Schematic only. Obtain model-specific geometry; no universal size deduction is shown.
A finished-opening survey and a movement plan answer different questions. Identify each reading and check the actual product configuration; the drawing is not to scale. Swipe horizontally on small screens.

Set Hold Points Between Survey, Quote and Manufacture

The following gates are a proposed project workflow, not a standard-mandated inspection regime. Assign named people rather than departments alone.

Hold point Work that pauses Who resolves the question Evidence for release
HP1: Finish definition Treating unfinished dimensions as final Designer and main contractor Finish build-up and landing drawing identified
HP2: Site survey Issuing a final dimensional enquiry Surveyor and installer Dated readings, marked plan and photographs
HP3: Product fit review Accepting a quote as a fit confirmation Enclosure supplier with installer input Exact model/configuration and applicable fitting limits
HP4: Quote clarification Comparing apparently equal prices Buyer and supplier Assumptions, exclusions, handing and finish recorded
HP5: Dimensional release Bespoke manufacture or irreversible site work Authorised project approver and relevant technical parties Final survey and approved drawing revision; exceptions closed
Measurement pack: separate quotation from dimensional releaseA proposed five-gate workflow: finish definition, site survey, product fit review, quote clarification and final dimensional release. Quotation alone does not release manufacture. One survey pack. Two different approvals. The quotation decision must not silently become a manufacturing instruction. HP1Define finishRecord build-upHP2Survey openingKeep all readingsHP3Review model fitExact configurationHP4Clarify quoteExpose assumptionsHP5Release dimensionsApproved revision A later site change reopens the affected approval. It is not covered by an earlier quote.
The project assigns authority to each release gate. A quotation does not release manufacturing dimensions. Swipe horizontally on small screens.

Inspect the Interfaces That a Width Cannot Describe

Finished Walls and Fixing Zones

Show tile returns, niches, wall panels and concealed-service restrictions that may affect profiles or hinges. A suitable opening width does not prove that the wall can carry the selected fixing. Request the fixing requirements for the selected system and have the site team confirm the substrate and waterproofing interface. Do not drill to investigate hidden services without the appropriate site checks.

Tray or Floor Landing

Mark where the glass, frame and seal meet the landing. Include a section if the tray edge, threshold, floor fall or waterproofing return is unclear. A tray's catalogue dimension is not automatically the finished enclosure opening. For a replacement, identify which parts of the old enclosure will disappear and whether their removal changes the reference surfaces.

Door Movement and Usable Access

Draw the selected door's movement on the plan, including handles and the approach area. Hinged, pivot, sliding and folding layouts have different clearance needs. Check the vanity, towel rail, radiator, toilet and bathroom entry door in the actual layout. Use the selected product's geometry rather than a generic sweep radius. Accessibility requirements, where applicable, need a separate review against the destination market and project brief.

Glass, Hardware and Finish as One Configuration

State the intended layout, glass appearance, profile, hardware finish and handing together. A catalogue photograph is not evidence that every combination is available. Ask the supplier to identify the complete compatible configuration and any exclusions. This avoids a late substitution being presented as a like-for-like solution.

Turn Site Changes Into Controlled Decisions

When an input changes, record the consequence before updating the order. These are decision triggers, not permission to make site modifications.

Change discovered Recheck Decision record
Extra finish thickness or a new tile return Finished opening, profile fit and fixing position Revised survey and affected drawing
Tray moved or replaced Glass line, landing, seal boundary and clearances Tray revision plus supplier compatibility response
Vanity or towel rail relocated Door travel, handle clearance and access Updated plan and confirmed handing
Different hardware/profile proposed Glass interfaces, adjustment and visible finish Complete replacement configuration, not one component alone
Rooms differ from the surveyed sample Which room types need distinct layouts or surveys Room-type schedule and authorised exceptions

Do not force a standard enclosure to fit by unauthorised packing, trimming or drilling. In particular, do not assume toughened glass can be altered on site. Escalate conflicts to the supplier and responsible project parties before installation.

Coordinate Buyer, Designer, Installer and Supplier

Role Must confirm Must not approve alone
Buyer Scope, price basis, options, exceptions and approval stage Site dimensions or structural fixing suitability
Designer/project technical lead Layout, finish build-up, access and trade interfaces Unverified as-built dimensions
Surveyor/installer Actual geometry, landing, obstructions and installation feasibility A different product configuration without supplier review
Enclosure supplier Selected model information, fitting limits and configuration compatibility The site's uninspected substrate or local regulatory compliance
Authorised project approver Drawing revision and disposition of unresolved issues Treating an informal message as universal technical acceptance

The same organisation may perform several roles, but the records should still show which responsibility was checked. A salesperson forwarding a dimension is not necessarily the person authorised to approve it.

Reconstructed Case: A Nominal Door Size Became an Uncontrolled Order

This is an illustrative scenario, not Wakebath project data.

A buyer requests a “900 mm recess door.” The measurement was taken before the final wall finish. The quote lists a standard door but does not identify the finished-opening assumptions. Later, the installer finds a leaning wall and a vanity near the door movement zone. The commercial order is intact, but the intended installation is not yet resolved.

The useful response is not to average the readings or blame the nominal size. The team should:

  1. Record the finished widths and wall geometry against a marked elevation.
  2. Plot the selected door and handle on the current room plan.
  3. Ask the supplier to check that survey against the exact model and configuration.
  4. Agree any redesign or product change before manufacture or irreversible fixing.
  5. Attach the accepted revision to the order and repeat the check for differing room types.

The prevention is a controlled handoff: a quote explicitly conditional on unresolved dimensions, followed by a separate dimensional release once those conditions are closed.

Use a Measurement-to-Quote Release Record

Copy these fields into the enquiry sheet. A drawing should carry the detailed geometry; the table makes approval status visible.

Field Required entry
Identity Project, room/room type, date, surveyor and units
References Plan/elevation revision, measurement surfaces and level datum
Finish status Finished/as-built or unfinished/design allowance; unresolved build-ups
Geometry Top/middle/bottom widths, measurement heights, available enclosure heights, wall plumb observations
Landing and fixing Tray/floor model and revision, intended glass line, substrate and interface questions
Operation Layout, handing, movement envelope, handle side and obstructions
Configuration Glass, profiles, hardware, finish reference and selected product identifier
Supplier response Applicable fitting information, assumptions, exclusions and questions
Approval Budget only / conditional quote / final dimensional release / hold; approver, date and conditions
Change control What changes reopen the review and who issues the next revision

Hold is a valid outcome. It is more useful than a clean-looking form that conceals unconfirmed measurements. Keep technical release separate from commercial acceptance, and make the current revision accessible to everyone placing, manufacturing or installing the order.

Request an enclosure measurement-pack review

Send the room ID, dimensioned plan and elevation, finish status, tray or floor section, opening direction and preferred glass and hardware. Wakebath can identify the current model information and unresolved interfaces that need review before a quotation is finalised.
