Shower Enclosure Safety Glass Evidence: Build a Market-Specific Compliance Pack
Shower enclosures · Safety glass · Market compliance
Short answer: “Tempered glass” is a manufacturing description, not a complete market-access file. Build the evidence pack around the destination market, exact glass construction, thickness, size class, plant, marking and current certificate or test scope. Then connect that glass evidence to the enclosure’s own functional requirements.
Separate Three Questions
| Question | Typical evidence | What it does not prove alone |
|---|---|---|
| Is the glazing safety glazing? | Applicable impact/breakage standard, test or certification and permanent mark | That the complete enclosure retains water or remains stable |
| Is the enclosure fit for intended use? | Enclosure functional standard, stability, endurance and water-retention evidence | Automatic legal acceptance in every country |
| Is this exact shipment traceable? | Plant, batch, panel code, mark, packing list and inspection record | That a report for another thickness or plant covers it |
Build a Destination-Market Matrix
Standards and legal routes are not globally interchangeable. The table below is a verification map, not legal advice.
| Market lane | Primary route to verify | Pack control |
|---|---|---|
| EU / UK | EN 14428 enclosure scope plus applicable glass and construction-product rules | Current declarations, standard editions, notified/approved-body involvement where required, and product marking |
| United States | CPSC 16 CFR Part 1201 for architectural glazing in shower and bathtub enclosures; ANSI Z97.1 may also be specified | Category/class, certification basis, label and exact product scope |
| Canada | Current national/provincial code route and CAN/CGSB safety-glazing requirements | Jurisdiction and edition; do not assume a US label alone is sufficient |
| Australia | NCC glazing provisions, AS 1288 installation and current AS 2208 safety-glazing evidence | Grade/type, thickness, exposed-edge condition and marking |
| New Zealand | Building Code F2 route and referenced glazing requirements | Permanent mark identifying manufacturer/supplier, glass type, standard and classification as applicable |
Lock the Exact Product Scope
A credible document set must identify monolithic or laminated construction, nominal thickness, coating or decoration, maximum certified size, impact class/category, plant and fabrication process. Holes, notches, edgework and drilling occur before tempering; a report for unfabricated stock glass does not automatically qualify every finished shower panel.
- Match the etched mark to the certificate or directory entry.
- Verify that the plant named in the evidence produced the glass.
- Check thickness and size/class coverage.
- Confirm whether coatings, frit, acid etch or other treatments are included.
- Record certificate validity, surveillance and revision status.
Use the Mark as a Traceability Key
A mark should lead to evidence, not merely imitate it. The National Glass Association explains that marking and certification requirements vary between ANSI, CPSC and certification programs. SGCC’s directory lets users search current certified products and records of compliance. A logo copied into a brochure is weaker than a panel mark that resolves to a current model-level listing.
Connect Glass Evidence to the Complete Enclosure
Safety glazing can still be installed in an unsafe system if holes, hinges, clamps, edge clearances, fasteners or wall substrates are wrong. EN 14428 addresses the enclosure’s functional performance within its scope, including endurance, stability and water retention. Keep panel evidence and system evidence linked but separate.
Release Checklist
- Destination country, jurisdiction and project specification confirmed.
- Exact panel schedule: glass type, thickness, dimensions, holes, notches and edgework.
- Applicable safety-glazing route and current edition identified.
- Test/certificate/listing scope matched to plant and product.
- Permanent mark verified on representative panels.
- Enclosure functional evidence and installation instructions current.
- Shipment and batch traceability linked to the evidence pack.
- Change control defined for plant, glass, coating, thickness and fabrication.

Ask for a Market-Specific Evidence Gap Review
Send the target market, glass schedule, supplier plant, proposed markings and available reports. Wakebath can return a gap list without treating unlike standards as equivalent.
