Shower Tray Drainage Planning: Waste Position, Build-Up and Access


Choosing a tray by length, width and colour leaves the most installation-sensitive interface unresolved: the waste.

The drain cover visible from above is only one part of the system. Below it are a waste body, seal, outlet, adaptor where required, pipe route and access condition. They must fit inside the available floor or riser build-up while the tray remains level and fully supported.

Keep five documents on the same page

  1. Tray plan drawing with drain-centre coordinates

  2. Tray section showing edge height and maximum underside depth

  3. Waste-body drawing with outlet direction and depth

  4. Site floor/joist or slab detail

  5. Waterproofing and enclosure junction detail

If one document is missing, the drawing set is not ready for approval.

Do not confuse three heights

Nominal edge height

The visible product dimension at the perimeter.

Maximum product depth

The deepest point of the underside profile. Falls, drain zones and structure can make it greater than the edge height.

Finished installation height

The site result after waste clearance, pipe route, bedding or adhesive, support system, waterproofing and finished floor are included.

Wakebath's current textured-tray documents, for example, separate a nominal 30 mm edge from model-specific maximum underside depths. That distinction must remain visible in the quotation and installation drawing.

Coordinate the waste in this order

  1. Fix the controlled reference edges

Confirm which wall or tray edge the drain coordinates reference. Check drawing orientation and handed models.

  1. Select the exact waste body

Record the body diameter, seal system, outlet direction, connection size, vertical depth and removal method. Do not assume the decorative cover means the waste kit is included.

  1. Draw the pipe route

Show the connection route and required fall under the applicable site rules. Check joists, reinforcement, underfloor heating and other services before drilling or cutting.

  1. Preserve service access

Decide how the connection can be installed, leak-tested and serviced. Ideal Standard's tray instructions specifically tell the installer to consider access to attach or repair the waste in place.

  1. Trial-fit before final fixing

Cosentino's quick guide calls for confirming the tray dimensions and drain position in the intended location, preparing a continuous level substrate and trial-positioning the tray and drain before final bonding.

Support and drainage are connected

A tray that rocks or lacks the specified support can load the drain connection and perimeter seal. A tray installed out of level can also change water movement and enclosure sealing conditions.

Use the exact model instructions for full bedding, adhesive coverage, feet, frame or riser system. Do not mix an installation method from another material family because the products look similar.

Tests before the installation is closed

Ideal Standard requires the installed tray connections, watertightness, flow and drainage across the tray to be checked before completion. That is a useful minimum decision point: do not seal away an untested connection.
