Shower Tray Tolerance: How to Compare Nominal and Finished Dimensions
Short answer: compare the manufactured tray dimensions with the finished wall faces, not only the nominal size printed on a quotation. Tile build-up, wall tolerance, trim, seal lines and enclosure adjustment all change the usable opening.
Use one measurement sheet for the tray, room and enclosure. Record the date, reference points and whether each measurement is rough or finished.
| Measurement | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tray overall length and width | Actual manufactured dimensions | Confirms the product supplied matches the drawing |
| Finished wall-to-wall size | Front, centre and rear readings | Reveals taper, bow and corner variation |
| Diagonals | Both diagonal readings | Shows whether the opening is square |
| Channel adjustment | Minimum and maximum range | Prevents a nominal fit from becoming an installation gap |
| Waste centre | Two-axis location from fixed edges | Protects drainage and service coordination |
Measure after the surfaces that define the enclosure
Measure once boards, tiles or the specified wall finish are in place. If the installation is not yet finished, state the assumed build-up and recalculate before ordering. A tray ordered from a rough opening can be too large, too small or correctly sized in only one section.
Do not average three readings to hide a local obstruction. Show the low and high points and ask whether the enclosure can absorb the variation. Adjustment is a designed range, not permission to force a channel against a twisted wall.
Release the order only when the tolerance has an owner
The buyer, installer and enclosure supplier should agree who owns each dimension. Attach the tray drawing, enclosure adjustment data and site measurement sheet to the order. If a change occurs, issue a revision instead of changing one number in an email thread.
Buyer FAQ
How much tolerance is acceptable?
There is no universal number. Use the exact enclosure adjustment range, tray drawing and site condition.
Should the tray be ordered before the enclosure?
Only when the enclosure interface and finished opening assumptions are documented and approved.
What if the walls are not square?
Record the variation and choose an enclosure or interface detail that explicitly accommodates it; do not conceal it with sealant.
