Shower Tray vs Shower Base vs Wet-Room Former
Short answer: “Shower tray” and “shower base” often describe a factory-made shower floor with a finished walking surface. A wet-room former is normally a pre-sloped construction element that still needs tile, stone or an approved finish. The names overlap by market and manufacturer, so the label alone is not enough for specification.
The reliable question is not “What does the supplier call it?” It is:
Which layer becomes the finished walking surface, and which company controls the slope, waterproofing, drain interface and support method?
This distinction matters to importers, project buyers and installers because a terminology error can move cost or responsibility from the product into the building work without anyone noticing.

Why product names are unreliable
Regional language is inconsistent.
In many UK and European catalogues, a finished acrylic, SMC, mineral-composite or stone-resin product is called a shower tray. In North American usage, shower base, shower pan or receptor may describe a similar finished product.
However, some tile-ready manufacturers also use the words tray, base or shower element. Schlüter describes KERDI-SHOWER-T/-TS/-TT as prefabricated expanded-polystyrene sloped shower trays with integrated waterproofing that are ready to tile. wedi describes Fundo Primo as a waterproof, tileable floor-level shower element with a factory-integrated slope.
Both are legitimate product descriptions. They also show why procurement should classify the construction rather than translate one noun.
Five questions that classify the product correctly
1. Is the visible surface already finished?
If the user stands directly on the factory surface after installation, the product is a finished tray or receptor for this classification.
If tile, stone or another covering must be added before use, treat the product as a tile-ready former or substrate even when the catalogue calls it a tray.
2. Who supplies the waterproofing system?
A factory-finished tray can resist water at its own surface while still depending on correct perimeter joints, wall interfaces, waste sealing and installation.
A tile-ready former may include an integrated waterproof layer, but seams, corners, penetrations and adjacent walls usually belong to a documented system. “Waterproof board” does not mean every junction is complete automatically.
3. Where is the drainage fall created?
The fall may be moulded into a finished tray, formed into a tile-ready former or constructed on site.
Do not use product edge height as a substitute for drainage geometry. Record the drain position, top reference, maximum underside depth, required build-up and finished threshold separately.
4. Which surface owns the slip claim?
For a finished tray, request the slip-test evidence for the exact factory surface, conditioning and test method.
For a tiled former, walking-surface slip performance normally comes from the selected tile-and-grout finish, not from the foam or waterproof layer below it. If a manufacturer supplies a separate finished overlay, such as wedi Fundo Top, evaluate that named surface as its own component.
5. What supports the system underneath?
Finished trays may require full bedding, a specific adhesive pattern, a frame, legs or a riser kit. Tile-ready formers commonly require an approved load-bearing substrate and bonding method. Site-formed floors depend on the designed construction build-up.

Which system is appropriate?
Choose a factory-finished tray when
- the project wants a controlled visible surface without site tiling;

- the approved support, waste and enclosure interfaces can be coordinated.
Choose a tile-ready former when
- visual continuity with the bathroom tile is a primary design objective;
- the floor build-up can accommodate the former, drain and covering;
- the project team will control tile selection and the waterproofing system;
- falls, perimeter heights and cutting rules match the intended layout;
- competent installation and concealed-work inspection are available.
Choose a site-formed shower floor when
- geometry cannot be served by an approved prefabricated product;
- the designer and installer can control falls, waterproofing and interfaces;
- programme and curing requirements are accepted;
- the project has a defined inspection and responsibility route.
No option is universally superior. The correct choice is the one whose complete assembly can be specified, installed, inspected and serviced with the least unresolved responsibility.
Can the shower enclosure be installed on all three?
Potentially, yes—but the fixing and sealing detail changes.
With a finished tray, the enclosure is normally set out relative to the tray perimeter and finished wall. The tray must already be stable, level at the required references, sealed and tested before the enclosure is fitted.
With a tile-ready or site-formed floor, the enclosure meets the completed tile or approved finish. The project must define:
- finished opening dimensions;
- threshold or floor profile;
- waterproofing beneath any fixing location;
- whether profiles are fixed only to walls or also to the floor;
- permitted drilling zones and penetration sealing;
- glass-line position relative to the drainage fall;
- water-control expectations for the chosen enclosure layout.

Is a wet-room former automatically waterproof?
