Shower Tray–Wall Junction: Upstand, Sealing Strip or Flat Edge?

Short answer: “seal the tray to the wall” is not a complete detail. The project must identify the tray edge, wall system, waterproofing layer, finish thickness and construction sequence. An upstand, a compatible sealing strip and a flat tray edge create different interfaces.

The visible silicone bead is usually the last line in the drawing, not the whole water-management strategy. Approve the concealed junction before wall finishes hide it.

Collect five inputs before selecting the detail

  1. Exact tray drawing: edge width, upstand position, corner radius, surface texture and any no-fix zone.
  2. Wall build-up: substrate, waterproof layer, adhesive and finish thickness.
  3. Movement allowance: the gap and sealant type stated by the product/system instructions.
  4. Enclosure interface: wall-profile position, tray flat zone and screw restrictions.
  5. Construction sequence: who installs the tray, waterproofing, wall finish and enclosure—and who signs off each concealed stage.

What manufacturer instructions can and cannot tell you

Ideal Standard's Simplicity instructions state that, when a cited tray has a tiling upstand, allowance must be made to recess it into adjacent walls so tiling can meet the tray surface. That is evidence that an upstand changes setting-out and wall build-up.

Ideal Standard's Ultra Flat Evo instructions describe a perimeter clearance and acetic-silicone condition for the cited system. Do not copy those dimensions or chemistry to another tray. The correct lesson is to obtain the exact manual and keep its numerical and material requirements attached to that model.

Build a junction approval drawing

A useful section is large enough to show the tray edge and wall build-up, not merely a generic bathroom elevation. Mark:

  • finished wall line and substrate line;
  • waterproofing termination or proprietary strip position;
  • tray edge or upstand with real dimensions;
  • movement/sealant joint defined by the selected system;
  • enclosure profile and fastener zone;
  • inspection hold point before the junction is covered.

At corners, show continuity. A junction that works in a straight section can still fail where a strip folds, an upstand stops or two wall systems meet.

Three common specification failures

“Use waterproof silicone”

This does not identify substrate preparation, primer, bead geometry, cure time or the concealed waterproofing interface. Use the approved system documents.

“The tray has an upstand”

Confirm which sides, its height, the corner detail and whether the selected size/handing includes it. Product-family language is not a drawing.

“The wall profile will cover it”

An enclosure profile is not automatically a waterproofing transition. Its sealing and drainage route remain governed by the enclosure manual.

Pre-closure hold point

Before tiling or panelling, photograph the complete junction, corners and penetrations with a scale marker and the drawing reference. Confirm that the tray is stable and the waste test has passed. Record the approved sealant/strip batch where the project requires traceability. Only then release the wall finish.

Buyer FAQ

Is an upstand always better?

It can create a useful overlap, but only when the wall build-up and installation sequence are designed for it. It is not a substitute for coordinated waterproofing.

Can a sealing strip be added after tiling?

Many strips are designed as concealed system components. Treat a late proposal as a redesign and obtain written approval for the exact product combination.

Should the enclosure profile sit on texture?

Confirm the continuous flat zone and seal requirements. A textured or sloped zone can change profile bearing and bottom-seal contact.
