Shower Tray Installation Checklist Before Tiling and Enclosure Fitting

Short answer: inspect the shower tray installation while the substrate, support and waste connection are still visible. Once tiling, wall panels or the enclosure hide these interfaces, a photograph of the finished bathroom cannot prove how the tray was supported, connected or tested.

This is not a universal fitting recipe. Bedding material, adhesive, legs, frames, wall gaps, curing time and silicone locations remain specific to the exact tray and enclosure instructions.

The purpose of a hold-point checklist is different: it defines what must be seen, measured and recorded before the next trade is allowed to cover the work.

Why a finished photograph is weak evidence

A completed shower can look correct even when one concealed interface is unresolved.

  • A level rim does not prove continuous support underneath.
  • Water reaching the waste does not prove that an inaccessible pipe joint is dry.
  • A neat silicone bead does not prove that the wall-to-tray waterproofing junction is complete.
  • An enclosure that fits today does not prove that the tray will remain stable under load.
  • A product label saying “cuttable” does not prove that the actual cut, edge and support comply with the model rules.

The right inspection sequence therefore follows the order in which evidence disappears.

The eight hold points

Hold point 1: accept the product before installation

Unpack and inspect the tray before site modification or bonding.

Record:

  • model and batch identification;
  • ordered and measured dimensions;
  • colour and finish;
  • waste position and orientation;
  • flatness or straightness checks required by the manufacturer;
  • photographs of the face, edges, corners and underside;
  • any visible damage to the packaging.

This is not paperwork for its own sake. Some manufacturers explicitly treat installation as acceptance of the product condition. Discovering a wrong size or deformation after the tray is fixed creates an avoidable dispute between supply, installation and site teams.

Hold point 2: reconcile the tray with the finished room

The tray can be the correct catalogue size and still be wrong for the finished installation.

Check the actual wall build-up, recess, corner geometry, threshold relationship, enclosure landing area and profile adjustment. If the walls are not yet finished, show their future thickness on the coordinated drawing.

Where a site cut or factory custom size is proposed, approve one marked drawing that also shows the drain, perimeter support, wall junction and enclosure position. A cut dimension in an email is not enough.

Hold point 3: approve the model-specific load path

Do not release the support work from a material label such as “stone resin”, “mineral composite” or “lightweight”. Products within those broad families can require different support systems.

The controlled installation file should identify:

  • the exact manual revision;
  • the substrate construction and preparation;
  • whether support is continuous or uses an approved frame, legs or riser kit;
  • the permitted bedding or adhesive and its application method;
  • required perimeter bearing;
  • exclusions for the waste and service access;
  • how support changes after any authorised cut.

If the document cannot show how user load passes from the tray into the building structure, the detail is not ready.

Hold point 4: dry-fit the tray and waste as one assembly

Present the tray, waste and outlet pipe together before final fixing.

Verify:

  • drain-centre coordinates;
  • waste flange and seal compatibility;
  • outlet direction and pipe gradient;
  • clearance below the tray;
  • access for tightening and inspection;
  • conflict with joists, support members or reinforcement;
  • removal route for serviceable trap components.

The smallest visible tray height is not the required site depth. Waste body, pipe route, support system and finished-floor junction all contribute to the real build-up.

Hold point 5: test what will become inaccessible

A useful drainage test is staged before closure.

First, test the waste and pipe connection while joints can be observed. Then, after the tray is installed, test the completed drainage path and inspect every joint that remains accessible. Record the test condition and result.

Do not convert one successful water pour into an unlimited claim. The test confirms the inspected assembly under the stated condition; it does not prove long-term performance if the tray later moves or a connection is stressed.

Hold point 6: separate level, stability and drainage

These are three different checks.

Level

Measure the reference points stated in the product instructions. Many factory-formed trays incorporate their own drainage planes, so the installer normally checks the prescribed rim or datum instead of inventing an additional site fall.

Stability

Check for movement under the approved inspection condition. A tray can read level and still bridge over a low area or move because its support system is incomplete.

Drainage behaviour

Observe whether water reaches the waste under the stated test condition. Small residual droplets, surface texture and installation geometry must be interpreted against the product evidence rather than a generic promise that every drop will disappear immediately.

Hold point 7: release the wall-to-tray waterproofing junction

The tray surface is only one part of the wet-area system. Water can reach corners, wall penetrations, board joints, the perimeter junction and enclosure profiles.

Before tiling or panels hide the wall build-up, confirm:

  • the selected wet-area board or membrane system;
  • treatment of internal corners and fixings;
  • continuity at pipe and valve penetrations;
  • the approved tray-to-wall junction;
  • compatibility between tapes, membranes, sealants and finishes;
  • the enclosure manufacturer's silicone locations and drainage paths.

Do not seal by habit. Some enclosure profiles are designed to drain water back toward the tray, and an internal silicone bead can block that path. Follow the exact enclosure manual.

Hold point 8: hand the tray over before the next trade arrives

The pre-closure record should include:

  • accepted tray and identification;
  • finished or coordinated opening dimensions;
  • substrate and support photographs;
  • dry-fit waste and pipe-route photographs;
  • concealed-joint test result;
  • installed level and stability record;
  • waterproofing-junction photographs;
  • curing or no-load period from the exact instructions;
  • protected surface before tiling, panels or enclosure installation;
  • inspector, installer, date and outstanding conditions.

The handover status should be unambiguous: released, released with stated conditions, or not released.

Can the installer use a familiar method if the tray material looks similar?

Not without confirmation. Similar appearance or a broad material name does not establish the same underside construction, support route, adhesive compatibility or warranty condition.

Should the tray be installed before tiling?

The sequence must come from the exact tray, waterproofing and wall-finish system. The hold-point principle remains the same: inspect every junction before the next layer makes it inaccessible.

Is a water test after the enclosure is fitted enough?

No. A final water-control test cannot reveal how a concealed waste joint, support bed or wall junction was constructed. Pre-closure and final tests answer different questions.

Who should sign the hold point?

The responsible installer and the project party accepting concealed work should be named in the project quality plan. For private-label supply, the supplier should define which photographs and measurements are required for technical review or warranty support.
