Bathtub Handover Checklist: Test the Installation Before It Is Closed

Short answer: the best time to prove a bathtub installation is while the drain, overflow, supports and service route are still visible. A finished bathroom photograph cannot show whether a concealed connection stayed dry during filling and draining.

This checklist is an inspection sequence, not a universal installation recipe. The exact bath, waste, overflow, tap, support and sealant instructions still control the work.

Define the hold point

Do not permanently close a panel, deck, wall or floor access until the responsible installer has recorded the agreed checks. If the design intentionally provides no future access, that decision and its service consequence should be explicit before closure—not discovered during the first leak.

Hold pointEvidence to release itDo not close when
Product acceptanceModel, size, finish, handing and components match the order; damage recorded before installationIdentity, damage or missing-part questions remain open
Support and positionBath is level and supported as the exact manual requiresThe rim, apron or an unapproved packer is carrying unintended load
Drain and overflowExact parts, seals, route and accessible connections are photographedConnection identity or access is uncertain
Fill, overflow and drain testTest condition and dry connection observations are recordedMoisture, movement or unexplained level change appears
Supply and fitting checkAccessible supply and tap connections remain dry under the agreed testA concealed connection has not been observed
Surface and protectionFinal condition is photographed and protected from following tradesDamage attribution is already unclear
Service handoverAccess method, spare-part references and care documents are transferredThe future service route exists only in someone's memory

The eight-step handover sequence

1. Accept the product before it is fixed

Record the model and batch or serial identity, dimensions, colour, finish, drain orientation and included components. Photograph the packaging and all visible surfaces. If damage or a wrong specification is found, pause before modification or installation changes the evidence.

2. Confirm the delivery and handling record

Note how the bath reached the room, the lifting points used and any contact with doorways, stairs or the floor. This is especially useful for freestanding and textured baths, where damage may become visible only under final lighting.

3. Verify support and level

Compare the actual support points, frame, feet, bedding or deck with the exact model instructions and the project floor assessment. Do not assume that the visible rim supports the filled bath.

The check should distinguish empty product weight from the filled and occupied condition. Structural adequacy belongs to the responsible project professional where required.

4. Photograph the drain and overflow route

Capture component references, gasket orientation, pipe route, adaptors, trap and access opening before they are concealed. Confirm that the bath can reach its final position without twisting or loading the connection.

5. Test in stages while access is open

Use the sequence and test level required by the exact product and drainage instructions. A practical controlled record normally distinguishes:

  1. Supply and fitting observation.
  2. Drain-closed filling observation.
  3. Drain connection observation.
  4. Overflow connection observation at the required water level.
  5. Standing or soak period where specified.
  6. Full draining observation.
  7. Recheck after the bath is secured in its final position.

Kohler's installation overview describes checking drain and overflow connections during filling and a soak test before completion. A Sterling bath installation guide also directs the installer to inspect through the access panel and fill above the overflow connection when investigating leakage. These support staged, visible testing—not substitution for the selected bath manual or local requirements.

6. Record movement and water separately

If the bath moves, creaks or changes level, stop and assess support before treating any leak symptom. If moisture appears, note the first point, time and test stage. Do not immediately tighten every fitting or add sealant; uncontrolled changes make the root cause harder to prove.

7. Protect the finished surface

After the installation passes its tests, photograph the dry, clean surface under useful lighting. Install the manufacturer-approved protective covering before other trades continue. Record any mark already present and avoid adhesive, abrasive material or site debris that the care guide does not permit.

8. Transfer a service-ready handover pack

  • Exact bath, waste, overflow and tap references.
  • Current installation and care instructions.
  • Pre-closure photographs.
  • Test date, condition and result.
  • Access-panel location and safe removal method.
  • Spare seal or service-part references where available.
  • Approved cleaner and prohibited-chemical guidance.
  • Installer and supplier contact route.

If a problem appears after closure

Do not start by removing finished work at random. Compare the new symptom with the handover record, identify which connections were proven dry, and reopen only the controlled access required for the next test. Where the record is missing, state that uncertainty rather than treating an assumed cause as fact.

Buyer FAQ

Is running water into the bath enough?

No. The drain, overflow, supply and standing-water conditions are different test stages. The exact procedure and duration remain model- and project-specific.

Does a removable panel guarantee useful access?

No. Its opening must allow the intended connection to be seen and serviced without damaging the bath or surrounding finish.

Who should sign the handover?

The project should name the responsible installer or inspector and the party accepting the record. A photograph folder without identity, date and test condition is weak evidence.

Coordinate freestanding-bath drainage, verify overflow and waste compatibility and plan service access.
