Bathtub Size Is Not Bathing Depth: Compare Usable Geometry

Short answer: external height does not tell a buyer how deep the bathing water will be. Compare internal depth, waterline to overflow, usable capacity, floor length, backrest angle, rim width and user displacement under the same definitions.

A tall freestanding shell can hide a thick base, wide rim or raised overflow. Comfort and water use come from internal geometry, not the catalogue silhouette.

Ask for five dimensions, not one

Normalize competing data

  1. Use the technical drawing for the exact model and revision.
  2. Record how each manufacturer defines capacity and depth.
  3. Confirm whether waste/overflow hardware is included in the measurement.
  4. Compare one-person and two-person layouts separately.
  5. Account for user displacement rather than treating full capacity as consumption.
  6. Check local hot-water storage and delivery against the intended fill.

Run a comfort review before range approval

Use a physical sample or full-size mock-up for target users where possible. Check step-over height, seat/floor length, back support, shoulder position, foot contact, tap reach, overflow location and safe exit. A larger litre figure can accompany a shorter usable floor or a posture that does not fit the market.

Do not publish an ambiguous capacity claim

State whether litres refer to the geometric shell, the level below overflow, or a tested condition. Identify accessories that change the waterline. If the source does not define the method, do not use the number to claim better comfort or efficiency.

A small buying case

Two baths are both 1700 × 750 mm. Model A lists 165 litres and 460 mm internal depth; Model B lists 180 litres without a definition. The higher number cannot win the comparison until its waterline, overflow, internal floor and test basis are known.
