Before Drilling Bathtub Tap Holes: Check the Full Interface

Short answer: do not drill a bathtub rim simply because the tap base fits on top. The bath and tap manufacturers must approve the location, hole size, rim construction, reinforcement, underside clearance, spout reach, lever movement and future service access.

A “no tap hole” bath may allow site drilling—or it may be intended for wall/floor taps. The product drawing and installation instructions decide.

Dry-fit before marking

  1. Install or mock up the bath at final height and orientation.
  2. Place the tap template on the approved rim zone.
  3. Check spout reach and discharge into the bowl.
  4. Operate every lever and handshower through its full movement.
  5. Inspect below with the overflow, frame and supply connections represented.
  6. Confirm reinforcing plate, washer and tightening method.

Control the drilling operation

Protect the finish, use the tool and pilot method specified for the bath material, support the work area and control debris. Do not oversize the hole to correct poor marking. Inspect the cut edge before installing the fitting. Tighten to the tap instructions without crushing a thin or curved rim.

Plan service before sealing the bath

Flexible hoses, valves, diverters and handshower connections remain service items. Provide a real access route for inspection and replacement. A fitting that can be installed only before the bath is enclosed is not automatically maintainable afterward.

A small site case

A monobloc tap is centred visually on the rim. Below, its clamp collides with the overflow body; above, the lever touches a folding bath screen. Both conflicts should have been found during the dry-fit overlay, before drilling created a permanent nonconformance.

Primary references and evidence boundary

  • Bath-standard scope: BSI — BS EN 14516:2015+A1:2018 addresses domestic-bath functional performance. It does not define where an unverified tap hole may be drilled.
  • Bath-deck evidence: a Kohler bath guide identifies specific deck-mount models, reinforcement, surface protection and hole preparation.
  • Interface evidence: an Ideal Standard fitting guide checks overflow and shower-screen conflicts before drilling the stated hole for that fitting.

Evidence boundary: Sources were accessed on 2 September 2026. A drillable deck is a model- and zone-specific feature. Hole diameter, edge distance, reinforcement, tool, tap footprint and service clearance must be approved as one bath–tap interface before cutting.
