Low-Profile Shower Tray Over Joists: Coordinate the Opening Before Cutting

Short answer: a low tray does not make the floor structure disappear. Before anyone cuts a board—or a joist—overlay the tray waste position, waste body, pipe fall, joist layout, support detail and finished floor levels. If they conflict, redesign the layout before installation.

A drain hole is not only a diameter. The waste body, locking ring, tool clearance, pipe bend, test access and structural edge distances all occupy space.

Set three red lines before site work

Do not notch or drill structure by assumption

Joist alterations must follow the relevant structural design and local rules. The tray installer should not decide an unshown structural cut simply because the waste lands over timber.

Do not enlarge the opening until the complete waste is checked

Ideal Standard's Simplicity suspended-floor instructions call for a hole large enough for the cited waste and say openings should be kept to the minimum. The manual also calls for a single piece of plywood and access to connect the plumbing. Those are model-specific requirements, but they show why the complete waste—not only the visible outlet—must be coordinated.

Do not allow the tray or waste to bridge unsupported edges

The exact tray manual controls its support method. A clearance cut that removes required bearing or forces the waste against structure can create movement, point loading or stressed seals.

Use a before-cutting workflow

  1. Mark the finished tray perimeter and waste centre from the approved drawing.
  2. Locate joists and concealed services using the project information and appropriate site checks.
  3. Place the actual waste assembly—or an accurate model—on the overlay.
  4. Draw the pipe route with fittings, not a single centreline.
  5. Check support and access around the opening.
  6. Resolve conflicts through tray position, waste option, pipe route, floor build-up or engineered structure.
  7. Issue the approved marked-up drawing before cutting.

Inspect before bedding or closure

  • The opening matches the approved drawing and has no unapproved structural cut.
  • The tray has the full support required by its instructions.
  • The waste is not bearing against the floor edge or forcing the tray upward.
  • The pipe is connected without twist or tension.
  • The waste and joint remain visible during the first test.
  • The tray datum is compatible with the adjacent floor and enclosure.

Buyer FAQ

Can the tray simply move a few centimetres?

Possibly, but recheck enclosure fit, wall junctions, pipe route, door position and the room layout. A small tray move can change several interfaces.

Can a flexible connector solve a joist conflict?

Only if the exact waste manufacturer, local rules and project designer accept it. Flexibility does not remove the need for correct fall, support, access and watertight connections.

Who approves a joist alteration?

The competent structural authority for the project—not the tray supplier's generic article.
