What a Salt Spray Result Can — and Cannot — Tell You
Salt spray testing is useful for quality control. It is often misused as a shortcut for years of bathroom service life.
ISO 9227:2022 defines neutral salt spray, acetic acid salt spray and copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray procedures. The standard also makes an important boundary clear: it does not set a universal exposure duration or acceptance rule for every product, and its methods are not intended to rank unrelated materials or predict long-term corrosion resistance.
A complete result needs seven fields
- Exact component and material
- Substrate preparation and coating stack
- Test method: NSS, AASS or CASS
- Standard edition and any product specification
- Exposure duration and inspection intervals
- Acceptance criteria and evaluation area
- Report identity, sample quantity and result
“Passed 200 hours” is incomplete if the reader does not know what counted as failure.
Separate process control from service-life claims
Salt spray can help detect coating discontinuities and compare production consistency when the specimens, coating, procedure and acceptance rule remain controlled.
It cannot independently establish:
- Years of service in a real bathroom
- Performance under every cleaner or water chemistry
- Galvanic effects in the assembled enclosure
- Wear at hinges, rollers or fasteners
- Colour stability under light
- Resistance to condensation/dry cycles not represented by the method
If service conditions matter, add relevant material, cleaner, cyclic, adhesion, wear and assembled-product evidence.
Build a coating evidence pack
- Material declaration for the base component
- Pretreatment and coating specification
- Colour/gloss tolerance
- Coating-thickness measurement method
- Adhesion evidence where applicable

- Post-test photographs with controlled evaluation areas

- Approved cleaning and maintenance instructions
Correcting a common marketing mistake
Do not convert test hours into “equivalent years”. The chamber is an accelerated, controlled environment, not a time machine.
A responsible statement is:
Samples from the stated coating system were tested under the identified salt spray method for the stated duration and met the defined visual acceptance criteria.
That statement is narrower, but commercially stronger because it can be audited.

A test plan needs acceptance criteria
Dropping or vibrating a box is only an activity unless the plan defines:
- Exact product and pack configuration
- Conditioning, orientation and sequence
- Test method and severity
- Number of samples
- Pre- and post-test inspection
- Allowed and disallowed damage
- Functional reassembly check
- Report and photograph retention
The acceptance rule should distinguish cosmetic carton damage from product damage, loose hardware, glass-edge defects and installation-affecting profile deformation.
Retest after meaningful changes
ISTA advises retesting when product, material, internal protection, closure or distribution-system changes may affect performance. A new handle, thinner carton or different pallet pattern can invalidate the relevance of an older report.
Claims evidence at delivery
Before packaging is discarded, capture:
- Outer carton on all sides
- Shipping label and batch/model code
- Pallet and restraint condition
- Internal protection in opening sequence
- Glass edge and corner condition
- Profile and hardware position
This evidence helps separate manufacturing, packing, loading and transport events.
