How to Specify a Shower Enclosure Beyond Glass Thickness
“6 mm, 8 mm or 10 mm?” is a valid product question, but it is not a complete selection method.
Glass thickness changes panel weight, feel, hardware demand and sometimes the visual character of an enclosure. It does not tell you whether the enclosure fits the finished opening, contains water in the intended layout, has replaceable seals or survives the distribution route.
Specify the enclosure as a system.
THE EIGHT-PART ENCLOSURE SPECIFICATION
Installation geometry
State recess, corner, three-sided, quadrant, offset quadrant, walk-in or bath-screen application. Record the finished opening and tray or floor geometry.
Adjustment range
Use the manufacturer's minimum and maximum fitting dimensions for the exact model. A nominal 900 mm product may have a fitting range below 900 mm. Roman, for example, publishes a model-specific range of 850–875 mm for one current 900 × 900 quadrant enclosure. That is an example, not a universal offset.
Glass specification
Record thickness, safety-glass type and applicable evidence for the destination market. Also record panel dimensions, holes, notches, edge finish, marking and any protective coating.
Thicker glass generally increases mass. The hardware, rollers, profiles, packaging and installation method must be designed for the actual panel, not selected from thickness alone.
Structural and moving hardware
Define hinge, pivot, roller, clamp and guide materials; fasteners; anti-jump or retention features; adjustment method; and replacement-part availability. The safety of a moving door depends on the assembled system and correct installation.
Profiles and wall fixing
Record profile alloy/finish, wall-fixing method, required reinforcement, approved anchors and extension profiles. MERLYN requires reinforced construction for certain wall-hinged bespoke doors, illustrating why substrate support belongs in the product decision.
Water-control design
Identify thresholds, deflectors, magnetic seals, overlap, bottom seals and intended showerhead position. “Frameless” does not mean “waterproof”. Lower visual barriers usually require a more explicit discussion of water behaviour.
Installation boundary
Collect the current installation manual, tray compatibility, drilling restrictions, sealant locations, curing time and adjustment sequence. Confirm whether the enclosure may be installed on the selected tray rim or directly to a wet-room floor.
Packaging and after-sales
List pack count, glass orientation, edge protection, hardware separation, replacement seals and spare parts. A premium door without service parts can create a poor lifetime offer for a distributor.
