How to Store a Shower Tray on Site Before Installation
Short answer: temporary storage is a controlled stage between delivery and installation. Accept or quarantine the tray at receipt, store and move it according to the exact model instructions, then repeat the condition check before installation.
There is no safe universal orientation for every acrylic, mineral/resin, SMC, steel, ceramic, solid-surface or sandwich-composite tray. The package label and current instructions for the exact model take priority.
Start with an instruction hierarchy
- Model-specific packaging label and handling symbols.
- Current installation, transport or storage manual for the exact revision.
- Written clarification from the manufacturer or authorised supplier.
- Project method statement based on those documents.
If orientation, support or stacking is not defined, isolate the tray and ask. Do not invent a rule because a different product was stored that way successfully.

A signed delivery note is not a complete condition record. Photograph the unopened package first, then follow the model instructions for unpacking and inspection.
Approve the storage zone
- Keep it away from vehicle routes, door swings and routine foot traffic.
- Remove screws, stones, tile fragments, mortar and point-load hazards.
- Keep tools, cartons, tiles and bags off the tray and its package.
- Avoid uncontrolled water, direct heat, sunlight or chemicals unless explicitly allowed.
- Keep the model label and instructions with the product.
- Record who controls the area and when the next inspection is due.
If the manufacturer specifies temperature, humidity or a maximum storage duration, copy those limits into the site record. If no limits are stated, record the actual conditions instead of inventing numbers.
Position and support are product-specific
Some manufacturers instruct installers to keep particular trays flat and evenly supported. Other products may use a transport system designed for another orientation. The correct question is not simply “flat or vertical?” It is:
What support and orientation does this exact model require while packaged, partly unpacked and fully unpacked?
Unless the exact instructions permit otherwise, do not lean the tray against a wall, bridge it across two blocks, load a drain boss or corner, stack unrelated materials on top, or assume a lightweight tray tolerates uncontrolled flexing.
Plan every move before lifting
- Clear the route and open doors.
- Prepare the destination support.
- Confirm the handler count or lifting aid.
- Keep approved packaging or edge protection in place.
- Identify permitted grip and lifting points.
- Lift—do not drag—the tray across site debris.
Weight alone does not define the handling plan. Size, stiffness, grip points, edges, packaging geometry and route restrictions matter. A large lightweight tray may be easier to lift but more sensitive to twisting.
Protect it without trapping damage
Keep manufacturer-approved protection in place for as long as instructed, but keep that protection clean. Hard particles trapped under moving cardboard or sheet material can mark a visible surface.
Do not use the tray as a workbench, a platform for tiles or tools, temporary access across the bathroom, or a bin for construction waste. Do not tape an unknown adhesive directly to the finish.
Hold point 2: record changes during storage
Reinspect when the tray is moved, the package is opened or damaged, water or debris reaches the zone, materials are found on the tray, the installation date changes, or responsibility passes between trades.
Hold point 3: inspect again before installation
- Confirm model, size, finish and orientation.
- Inspect surface, edges, underside and drain area.
- Check flatness or deformation only with the model-approved method and limit.
- Confirm waste compatibility, finished opening and access.
- Confirm base flatness, level, support detail and required materials.
Do not try to make unexplained deformation, a crack, an impact mark or a dimensional mismatch disappear in bedding or sealant. Quarantine it and obtain a technical decision before installation.
A small site case
A 1600 × 800 mm tray arrives two weeks early. The team leans the unopened carton against a corridor wall, moves it three times and later stores boxes against it. On installation day, the edge condition is disputed.
The failure is not only the final position. There is no approved storage instruction, full-package receiving record, controlled zone, movement log or pre-installation release check. The correct next step is to quarantine and document the actual condition, then ask the manufacturer to assess the exact product.
