A Shower Tray Looks Warped Before Installation: Quarantine, Measure and Decide
Shower trays · Pre-installation inspection · Quality control
Short answer: Do not force a suspicious tray flat with bedding, screws, enclosure profiles or extra weight. Quarantine it first. Confirm the exact model and handling history, then inspect it on the reference support required by its manufacturer. Separate an uneven test surface and designed drainage fall from bow or diagonal twist. Record the setup and measurements, then obtain a model-specific release, recovery or replacement decision before installation hides the condition.
If the Shower Tray Looks Warped, Stop Before Bedding or Fixing It
A tray that looks warped before installation is a hold point, not an invitation to improvise. Once surrounding work is installed, the original geometry becomes harder to reproduce and removal costs increase.
Do not proceed with
- bedding or adhesive;
- a waste connection placed under stress;
- waterproofing closure;
- wall panels or tiles;
- enclosure fixing; or
- silicone sealing.
Installing before notification can also complicate causal and warranty assessment. The contractual and legal result depends on the relevant terms and jurisdiction, so preserve the condition before altering the tray.
Define the Suspected Deformation Before Judging It
“Not flat” is too vague for a release decision. The observation must identify the datum, direction, support condition and type of deviation.
| Term | What it means in this inspection | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Level | A datum or rim is horizontal relative to gravity | That the surface is flat |
| Flatness | Deviation from a defined plane over stated points | That the tray is level or correctly supported |
| Bow | Curvature along one line or edge | The cause, permanence or acceptability |
| Twist | Different corners do not share the intended reference plane | That a visible drainage fall is defective |
| Designed fall | Intentional geometry directing water to the outlet | A universal fall angle or drainage result |
| Local profile | Texture, rib, dome, recess or moulded detail | Whole-product deformation |
Datum warning: Do not compare the textured walking surface with a flat plane unless the product drawing or inspection method explicitly uses it. The rim, underside support zones and drain interface can have different intended geometries.
Rule Out an Uneven Test Surface Before Blaming the Tray
| Apparent problem | Possible non-product cause | Verification action |
|---|---|---|
| One corner rocks | Debris, damaged carton, uneven bench or drain boss touching | Use the manufacturer-required clean reference support and inspect underneath |
| Centre appears high | Designed drainage geometry or moulded tread profile | Compare with the current section drawing; do not assume the walking surface is a flat datum |
| Rim reads out of level | Reference platform or floor is not level | Verify the platform independently before measuring the tray |
| Edge gap changes when moved | Flexible pack, temporary support or elastic response | Record the support condition and obtain the manufacturer’s approved conditioning method |
| Isolated droplets remain | Surface tension or texture | Use the product-specific water-flow method; droplets alone do not diagnose deformation |
Record Transport, Storage and Support Before Measuring
- Identify the product. Record the exact model, dimensions, finish, batch and product revision.
- Preserve receipt evidence. Photograph the package and pallet condition before disposal.
- Reconstruct handling. Record orientation, supports, relocations, pack opening and any known impact.
- Record exposure. Note storage duration and any relevant temperature or environmental history without inventing a limit.
- Freeze the document set. Save the current drawing, installation instructions and inspection method used for the decision.
- Photograph the complete setup. Include the whole tray, all support zones, reference surface, drain clearance and readable instruments.
A close-up of a raised corner is a symptom record, not a measurement method.
Use Product-Specific Evidence—Not a Borrowed Tolerance
| Evidence type | What it can support | What it cannot decide by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model drawing and current manufacturer instruction | Datum, support condition, inspection method and model-specific limit | Responsibility if handling and site records are missing |
| Product standard or conformity document | Product scope, declared characteristics and prescribed tests | A universal site gap limit for every material and model |
| Building code or wet-area rule | Installed support, waterproofing and junction obligations within its jurisdiction | Whether an uninstalled tray is within factory geometry limits |
| Verified inspection record | Reproducible observed geometry under a stated setup | Root cause, warranty liability or a safe recovery method |
| Photograph without a verified setup | A visual symptom and surrounding context | Flatness, twist magnitude or conformity |
Set Up the Exact Manufacturer Reference Condition
Some manufacturer instructions tell the installer to place a tray on a flat, level surface and check outer edges for twist or distortion. Other constructions may require defined bearer positions, a frame or another support arrangement. Follow the exact model and revision.
Before recording gaps:
- verify the reference plane using a method and instrument appropriate to the required resolution;
- remove debris without damaging the product;
- confirm that packaging, a waste boss or an accessory is not carrying the tray;
- use only a conditioning period expressly approved for that product;
- identify the stated datum, straightedge length, measurement points and acceptance limit; and
- record the instrument identification and inspection time when traceability matters.
No universal 2 mm or 3 mm rule: A numerical limit from one brand, material, drawing or test setup cannot become a Wakebath, national or industry-wide tolerance.
Record Bow or Twist So Another Inspector Can Repeat the Check
| Field | Record |
|---|---|
| Reference surface | Material, dimensions and independent flatness/level check |
| Tray support | Continuous / bearer / frame; exact positions and approved drawing reference |
| Orientation | Top face up/down; outlet location; product datum |
| Rim readings | Defined points A–H or the model drawing references |
| Straightedge | Length, contact points, orientation and condition |
| Gaps | Location, maximum observed gap and gauge method |
| Diagonals | Measurement points and values, only when relevant to the product method |
| Designed geometry | Drawing reference for fall, dome, ribs or recesses |
| Time | Receipt, storage, approved conditioning and measurement timestamps |
| Media | Wide setup photographs plus close-ups and instrument display |
Repeatability is part of the evidence. If moving the tray, rotating it or changing the support changes the reading, record both setups instead of selecting the most convenient result.
This record makes the observation reproducible. It does not decide conformity until compared with the correct product requirement.
Do Not Force a Suspected Warped Tray Flat During Installation
The following actions can destroy evidence or introduce new stress:
- loading the tray with tiles or adhesive bags;
- clamping or screwing an unapproved edge down;
- pulling the rim into line with an enclosure profile;
- using the waste connection to hold position;
- filling gaps with expanding foam;
- using a thicker bedding layer to hide a twist; or
- heating or cooling the tray without a written procedure.
If the product is released for installation, the approved support system should carry it as designed. Installation is not a substitute for a technical disposition of pre-existing deformation.
Decide Whether to Release, Quarantine or Escalate the Tray
| Finding | Immediate status | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Reference surface or support is unsuitable | Measurement invalid | Correct the test setup and repeat without altering the tray |
| Geometry matches the current drawing and model-specific limits | Candidate for release | Complete drainage, outlet, substrate and enclosure-interface checks |
| Shape changes under an approved conditioning method and then meets limits | Conditional release only | Obtain written manufacturer disposition and retain before/after records |
| Bow or twist remains outside the product limit | Quarantine | Do not install; request replacement or documented technical disposition |
| No product limit or method is available | Unknown | Escalate to the manufacturer; do not invent acceptance criteria |
| Crack, delamination, damaged drain interface or abnormal movement appears | Structural concern | Isolate and escalate; cosmetic repair is not sufficient evidence |
Reconstructed case · The tray “fixed” by the enclosure
A long tray shows one raised corner before installation. The installer beds it and pulls the corner down while fixing the wall profile. The enclosure initially closes, but sealant later separates and door alignment changes.
The later symptom does not prove that the tray left the factory defective. The initial geometry was not recorded on a verified support; the tray was restrained; substrate and bedding were undocumented; and the enclosure or waste connection may have introduced force.
The preventable failure was proceeding without a release decision. The technical cause still requires product, storage and installation evidence.
