Textured Bathtub Mould Seams and Radius Transitions: Separate Appearance From Structure

Short answer: A visible line on a textured bathtub can be a planned mould split, a bonded-shell join, a finish transition, local rework or a crack. Draw the expected line and its function before production, then inspect structure, water exposure and appearance in that order. “Cosmetic” is a conclusion supported by evidence, not a name for every line.

Start With the Construction Drawing

A freestanding bath may combine inner and outer shells, local reinforcement, base boards, support frames and applied finishes. The external texture can cross areas made by different tooling or processes. Mark each expected mould split, trim edge, bond line, coating boundary and hardware interface on the controlled drawing.

Separate Form, Texture and Surface Imperfection

Large-scale form, mid-scale waviness and fine texture are different characteristics. A radius can be dimensionally correct while its texture is visually thin; a deep pattern can hide a local form step; and a colour line can exist without any geometric discontinuity. Use the correct measurement and acceptance method for each scale.

General GPS surface-texture standards such as ISO 25178 define measurement parameters, but they do not create a consumer-facing acceptance limit for a textured bathtub. The buyer and supplier still need a drawing zone, sampling method, filter, instrument and agreed functional meaning.

Inspect the Radius as a Process Zone

Texture often changes at tight radii because material flow, mould contact, release, coating build and finishing access differ from a flat face. Divide the product into visual and functional zones:

  • Primary viewing face: entry side and prominent exterior panels.
  • Touch zone: rim, hand contact and accessible edges.
  • Wet zone: bathing floor, waterline and drain transition.
  • Service zone: underside, waste, overflow and access openings.
  • Join zone: any bonded or mechanically connected construction boundary.

One universal defect limit is rarely sensible across all five. Set tighter appearance rules on the primary face, but never relax structural, sealing or sharp-edge requirements in a hidden zone.

Use a Section Sample and a Full-Size Master

A colour chip cannot show a join. Keep one cut section that identifies layer order, bond width and finish build-up, plus one full-size golden unit that shows the approved line under normal viewing conditions. Add upper and lower limit samples for texture thinning, join visibility and rework halo when these characteristics are difficult to describe numerically.

Change-control rule: Mould repair, release agent, shell trimming, bonding adhesive, fixture position, cure cycle, polishing pad or coating viscosity can change the line even when the nominal design has not changed. Treat these as re-approval triggers.

Investigate a Line in the Correct Sequence

  1. Identify the exact model, cavity, date, batch and planned construction boundary.
  2. Clean using the approved method so residue is not mistaken for damage.
  3. Record the full line, its end points and its position against fixed datums.
  4. Check whether it is colour-only, profile-only or both.
  5. Inspect the reverse side or section where safely accessible.
  6. Apply only the manufacturer-approved non-destructive load or leak check.
  7. Compare with the signed master and process record.
  8. Decide accept, rework, section, test further or reject—with a reason.
Stop normal release if:
  • a line is not shown on the construction drawing;
  • it changes under light hand load or after filling;
  • it connects to crazing, a soft area, blistering or delamination;
  • it reaches a drain, overflow, support or seal without interface verification;
  • rework changes texture, wall thickness or visible layer; or
  • production appearance drifts beyond the approved full-size master.
