Two Bathtub Installation Risks That Started Before Installation

Short answer: the first bathtub never reached the room safely. The second reached its final position but left no practical route to inspect the plumbing. Both risks existed before installation and could have been identified from a route survey and a service-access drawing.
Case 1 — the bath passed the doorway calculation but failed at the turn
Observed condition
A freestanding bath was approved because its bare product width was less than the bathroom doorway. On delivery, the protected bath reached a narrow corridor where the team could not rotate it through the final turn without removing protection or using an unsafe handling position.
The purchase order was technically correct. The delivery plan was not complete.

Working diagnosis
Product width was used as a proxy for delivery feasibility. It did not represent the protected handling envelope or the three-dimensional route.
Decision
Pause movement before protection is removed or the bath is forced through the turn. Re-survey the route, including stairs, landings, doors, ceiling restrictions and the final rotation. Compare the exact net and packaged dimensions, confirmed lifting instructions and available handling equipment. If the route cannot be controlled, change the delivery method, installation sequence or bathtub format before damage occurs.

- Packaged dimensions and removable packaging stages.
- Route widths, heights, diagonals, turns and floor protection.
- Lifting equipment and safe team plan determined by the responsible contractor.

Case 2 — the bath was sealed before anyone defined future access
Observed condition
A back-to-wall or built-in bath was aligned and sealed after a basic drainage check. The waste, overflow and levelling components then sat behind a fixed finish with no documented access panel. A later moisture concern could not be investigated without disturbing finished work.
Evidence that was missing
- The exact waste and overflow arrangement.
- The route for tightening, replacing or observing the connections.
- The panel or access opening size and removal direction.
- Photographs showing the connections before closure.
- A filled-to-overflow leak test record where required by the model instructions.
- Responsibility for reinstating the finish after service.
Working diagnosis
The installation sequence optimized the first visual handover and ignored the service phase. The absence of access did not identify the leak source, but it made diagnosis slower and more destructive.
Decision
Do not choose an access position from appearance alone. Map the components that may require inspection, the tool and hand space, panel removal path, sealant joint and nearby structure. Confirm the arrangement with the exact bathtub and plumbing instructions before the finish is closed. Test and photograph the connections at the specified stage.

Neither drawing is glamorous. Both can prevent a product selection from becoming a site problem.
Buyer FAQ
Is doorway width enough to approve a freestanding bath?
No. The route includes packaging, height, diagonals, turns, stairs, handling equipment and the space needed to rotate and set down the bath safely.
Can the installer decide the access panel after the bath arrives?
That is late. Plumbing, support, wall finish and joinery may already restrict the viable position. Coordinate access during layout and specification.
Does every freestanding bath need the same access method?
No. Drain design, floor construction, bath geometry and local requirements differ. Use the exact installation instructions and a competent site review.
