Two Shower Enclosure Fit Problems That Nominal Width Did Not Catch

Short answer: nominal width answers only one question. Enclosure fit also depends on where the opening is measured, wall plumb, threshold level, usable adjustment, fixing substrate, tray landing, door handing and the water path created by the room layout.
Case 1 — the centre measurement fitted, but the adjustment margin disappeared
Observed condition
The finished opening was checked once at approximately mid-height. That value sat inside the selected enclosure’s nominal range. During installation, the wall channel reached its practical adjustment limit near the top while the lower section still needed correction. The threshold was also slightly out of level.
The initial reaction was to pull the profile farther and hide the difference behind the cover.

Working diagnosis
The enclosure was selected from incomplete site data. The product had not yet been shown to be defective; the measured opening and installation limits were incompatible in their current state.
Decision
Do not install at the extreme position simply because the cover still reaches. Record the full opening, threshold and fixing substrate. Then either correct the site condition or select an enclosure whose exact published range and architecture cover the measured geometry with adequate profile and seal engagement.

- Three finished widths plus both diagonals.
- Wall plumb at the actual channel positions.
- Threshold level, pitch and tray landing.

Case 2 — the door opened, but the room did not work
Observed condition
A hinged enclosure was selected from the shower opening alone. In the installed room, the outward swing overlapped a vanity-use zone and crossed the route from the bathroom door. When users opened the wet door after showering, water was carried beyond the planned wet zone.
Nothing was mechanically broken. The layout decision was incomplete.
Evidence that clarified the problem
- A full-scale door-swing template, not only an arrow on plan.
- Handle projection and user hand position.
- Vanity drawer, towel rail and bathroom-door movement.
- Shower outlet position and likely direct spray path.
- Threshold, bottom seal and drip route for the exact model.
- The dry standing area required to enter and exit safely.
Working diagnosis
The enclosure was treated as a static glass rectangle. Door movement and water carried on the glass were not coordinated with the room.
Decision
Review handing, hinge position, inward/outward capability and alternative architectures such as sliding or folding only against the exact product instructions and access needs. A different door type may reduce one conflict while changing entry width, cleaning access, adjustment or sealing. The answer is a room-level trade-off, not a universal preference.

It should combine the finished opening, wall plumb, threshold, tray edge, adjustment position, fixing substrate, door arc, nearby fixtures and water path. That single controlled reference is more useful than a line that says “1200 mm hinged enclosure.”

Is a larger adjustment range always safer?
No. It can help with a defined dimensional condition, but it does not correct every bowed wall, out-of-square opening, tray radius, fixing problem or seal position.
Can handing be decided on site?
Only if the exact model permits it and the room has been checked. Handing affects access, nearby clearances, installation sequence and water control.
What should be approved before production?
Finished dimensions, adjustment position, tray or threshold interface, fixing zones, handing, door arc, handle, seals and the agreed water-control boundary.
