Built-In Bathtub Support: Define What Carries the Rim and Base

Short answer: a built-in bath rim, frame, base and tiled surround have different jobs. The bath must be supported and restrained by the exact model method; tiles and silicone should not be asked to carry an undefined structural load.

“Drop-in,” “undermount,” “built-in” and “with panel” are not interchangeable details. The rim may rest on a deck, sit above it, be fixed to battens or require a frame—depending on the model.

Keep the load path explicit

Record empty bath mass, design water capacity, occupant allowance and any concentrated loads from sitting or standing on the rim. Confirm where these loads transfer. If the manufacturer says the bath base carries the load and the rim is only sealed, do not wedge the rim upward. If the rim must be supported, construct the specified continuous or point support before filling.

Sequence the installation hold points

  1. Inspect the bath and verify model/orientation.
  2. Dry-fit waste, overflow, taps and service access.
  3. Build and record the approved support and restraint.
  4. Level the bath at the named datums without twisting it.
  5. Connect and test supply, waste and overflow under accessible conditions.
  6. Fill to the agreed test level and recheck stability and joints.
  7. Release waterproofing, deck/tiling and final seal only after evidence is accepted.

Protect future service

The access opening must reach the waste, overflow, taps and adjustable supports that may require attention. Confirm the panel can be removed after tile, skirting and sealant are complete. Photograph every concealed connection with a scale and orientation marker.

A small site case

A tiled deck is built 5 mm high, so the installer tightens the bath feet until the rim bears hard against the tile. When filled, the bath creaks and the silicone tears. The correction must restore the model's intended base and rim load path—not add a thicker cosmetic bead.
