Large Shower Tray Handling: Dry-Fit the Route Before Lifting

Short answer: large trays should be planned by handling envelope, stiffness and grip—not weight alone. Dry-fit the route and support sequence before unpacking the visible surface, then move the tray without dragging, twisting or loading the waste area.

A lightweight 1800 mm tray can be easy to lift yet difficult to turn through a doorway without torsion. The route must fit the packaged product, the handlers and the lifting posture.

Run a route rehearsal

  1. Use packaging dimensions or a rigid lightweight template.
  2. Open doors, remove loose obstructions and protect hard contact points.
  3. Mark where each handler stands through every turn.
  4. Confirm a safe set-down point if the move must pause.
  5. Prepare the final full support before the tray enters the room.
  6. Record any required packaging removal and obtain approval.

Control the tray during the move

  • Follow the package labels and model-specific lifting points.
  • Keep clean edge and surface protection in place where permitted.
  • Lift rather than slide across concrete, tile fragments or cardboard grit.
  • Keep the tray in a supported plane; do not twist opposite corners.
  • Do not grip decorative covers, drain bosses or unsupported thin edges.
  • Use vacuum lifters only where the manufacturer approves the surface and load.

Inspect at three moments

Record condition at receipt, immediately before the move and after placement. Use wide photographs of the whole tray plus close-ups of every edge, corner, underside support and waste zone. If a noise, impact, sudden flex or loss of grip occurs, quarantine and re-inspect before bedding.

A small site case

A 1700 × 900 mm tray weighs less than the old stone tray, so two installers carry it without a route check. To clear the door, one corner is lowered while the opposite corner remains high. A hairline edge condition is found later. Without before-and-after records, responsibility and timing cannot be established. A rigid route template and controlled set-down point would have exposed the turn conflict first.
