Two Shower Tray Problems Found Too Late: A Micro Case Review

Short answer: both cases looked like product problems after installation. Neither could be diagnosed from the product name or nominal size alone. The useful evidence was at the interfaces: finished opening, tray edge, enclosure adjustment, waste connection, support and the inspection record before closure.
Case 1 — the nominal tray size fitted, but the enclosure interface did not
Observed condition
A tray was selected from the room plan and described by its nominal length and width. The enclosure order was released before the final wall finish was complete. After boards, waterproofing and tile were installed, the opening tapered from front to back. The enclosure channel could sit on the tray at one end, but approached the tray radius at the other.
The immediate claim was: “the tray or enclosure is the wrong size.”

Working diagnosis
The primary control failure occurred at order release: rough or nominal dimensions were treated as finished installation dimensions. That does not prove a manufacturing defect in either product.
Decision
Pause enclosure installation. Record the finished opening and tray-edge geometry, then compare them with the exact enclosure adjustment range, channel footprint and seal path. The viable options may include correcting the finished wall, selecting another enclosure configuration or obtaining a project-specific interface approval. Do not force the profile to the end of its adjustment or move it onto a radius without approval.

- Finished widths, diagonals, wall plumb and tray level.
- Tray model, actual dimensions and edge drawing.
- Enclosure model, handing and published adjustment range.
- Photos showing the full opening and both channel landing zones.
- The approved decision and responsibility for any site correction.
Case 2 — a slow leak appeared after the waste area was concealed
Observed condition
A low-profile tray was installed, connected and surrounded by finished work. No accessible pre-closure photographs or signed drainage test record were available. A damp mark later appeared below the shower area. More sealant was proposed before the leak path had been identified.
Evidence that was missing
- Whether the exact waste body and seals matched the tray.
- Whether the connection moved when the tray was loaded.
- Whether the tray remained fully supported and level.
- Whether the waste was tested before and after the tray was secured.
- Whether moisture came from the waste, perimeter, enclosure or another service.
- How the connection could be inspected without uncontrolled demolition.
Working diagnosis
“Water below the shower” is a symptom, not a root cause. Additional perimeter sealant would change the evidence and could temporarily redirect water without proving that the waste connection was sound.
Decision
Stop use, protect the area and have a competent person create a controlled inspection plan. Dry and isolate the relevant zones, regain approved access where required, and test the exact waste and surrounding interfaces in a defined sequence. The repair decision should follow the identified leak path—not precede it.

This is more useful than a generic statement that a tray is “easy to install.”
