Will the Bathtub Reach the Bathroom?
The visible waste cover is not the drainage specification.
A freestanding bath needs an exact connection between the bath outlet, overflow system, hose or rigid assembly, floor rough-in and service route. The product may conceal these components, which makes pre-installation coordination more important.
Six interfaces to approve
1. Bath drawing
Record drain centre, overflow type, underside clearance, foot/support positions and any tap-hole restrictions.
2. Included components
List the waste, overflow, hose, adaptors, seals and support parts included with the exact model. “Drain included” should not hide a missing trap or regional adaptor.
3. Floor rough-in
Confirm outlet centre, connection size, projection above/below the finished floor and compatibility with the selected waste. Kohler instructions for one freestanding bath specify an exact drain-pipe projection and require the pipe to be centred under the bath — a reminder that rough-in dimensions are model-specific.
4. Finished floor and support
Install on the level finished floor required by the product instructions. Confirm adequate support and protect the surface during placement.
5. Service access
Decide how the drain and overflow can be inspected, tightened or replaced. Kohler recommends access from below for certain freestanding products and publishes a more involved disassembly route when that access is absent.
6. Testing
Test the drain and overflow before final sealing. Fill the bath to the required level, operate the waste, inspect every accessible connection and retain photographs. Check again after the bath is in its final secured position.
Avoid four common assumptions
- The waste cover proves the whole kit is included.
- A flexible hose removes the need for service access.
- The bath can be rotated after the floor connection is fixed.
- An overflow flow-rate claim applies to every model/configuration.

The delivery route is a three-dimensional problem involving the packed unit, the unpacked bath, grip points, turning envelopes, stairs, lifts and the final installation orientation. Check it before production, not at the project door.
Record both packaged and product dimensions
Packaging may add substantial width, height and handling restrictions. Decide where the bath can be safely unpacked and protected.
Collect:
- Product length, width and height
- Maximum diagonal and projecting features
- Net weight and centre-of-mass considerations
- Carton or crate dimensions and gross weight
- Approved lifting points and orientation
- Minimum handling team and lifting aids
Kohler's current freestanding-bath instructions warn that certain baths are extremely heavy, call for adequate help and lifting straps, and require the product to be measured for site preparation.
Survey the route
Building access
Check gate, loading bay, corridor, lift opening/interior, stair width, landing and temporary protection.
Doorways and turns
Measure clear openings after handles, stops and trims. Draw the turning area on both sides. A bath that passes through a doorway straight may still fail at the next 90-degree turn.
Vertical movement
Record stair pitch, handrails, ceiling height, lift payload and whether the bath must rotate from vertical to horizontal.
Bathroom entry and final position
Include installed furniture, walls, taps, floor outlet and space for the lifting team. Confirm whether the bath must be lowered over a fixed waste connection.
Floor and lifting are part of the route
The project team must confirm floor support for the bath, water and intended users under local requirements. Kohler installation guidance requires adequate floor support and a level finished floor for the exact product.
Do not infer structural approval from net product weight alone.
